What does g/kg mean?

g/kg stands for grams per kilogram. It is a mass concentration: how many grams of a substance are present in one kilogram of the total mixture. Because one kilogram is 1,000 grams, g/kg is the same as parts per thousand — so 1 g/kg = 1‰ = 0.1%.

Percent works the same way but uses a base of 100 instead of 1,000. That single difference is the whole conversion: a factor of 10.

Conversion formulas

g/kg to %

% = g/kg ÷ 10

5 g/kg ÷ 10 = 0.5% · 25 g/kg ÷ 10 = 2.5% · 250 g/kg ÷ 10 = 25%

% to g/kg

g/kg = % × 10

0.3% × 10 = 3 g/kg · 12% × 10 = 120 g/kg · 7.5% × 10 = 75 g/kg

Where g/kg is used

Food and nutrition labels — salt, sugar or fat content given as g/kg of product. Medicine and toxicology — dosing and residue limits, often alongside mg/kg. Agriculture and soil science — nutrient content of soil or fertiliser. Materials and water treatment — additive and contaminant levels, where ppm is the more common sibling unit.

FAQ

What is 1 g/kg in percent?

1 g/kg = 0.1%. One gram in one kilogram is one gram per 1,000 grams, which is one part per thousand, so it equals 0.1 percent.

How do you convert g/kg to %?

Divide the g/kg value by 10. For example, 5 g/kg ÷ 10 = 0.5%, and 25 g/kg ÷ 10 = 2.5%.

How do you convert % to g/kg?

Multiply the percentage by 10. For example, 0.3% × 10 = 3 g/kg, and 12% × 10 = 120 g/kg.

Is g/kg the same as ppm?

No, but they are directly related: 1 g/kg = 1,000 mg/kg = 1,000 ppm. Parts per million is a thousand times smaller than grams per kilogram.

Is g/kg the same as per mille (‰)?

For mass concentration, yes. 1 g/kg means 1 gram per 1,000 grams, which is exactly 1 part per thousand, so 1 g/kg = 1‰.

Can I convert g/kg of body weight to a percentage?

No. In nutrition, g/kg often means grams of a nutrient per kilogram of body weight — for example 1.6 g/kg of protein for an athlete. That is a dose ratio between two different things, not a mass concentration of a mixture, so it cannot be expressed as a percentage. Only use this converter when both quantities are masses of the same mixture.
